During the course of my work at IIAE, I have come across several scientists. Most of them work in different areas of communications. Interactions with them have made me realize the vastness and the scope of communications. My discussions with them convinced me that specializing in communications will suit me very well.
The subject of research which interests me very much is spread spectrum communication systems. Coding theory and combinations is another research subject which arouses my curiosity. The subject Communication Theory which I am studying at present introduces these topics in theory. I am eager to find out more about the applications of coding theory to spread spectrum communication systems.
In addition I have been a student member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) for the past three years. Through its workshops/seminars and publications like the 'The Spectrum' it has exposed me to a lot of emerging technologies in the field of communications.
It is a strong belief in my family that the American education system has the best to offer in the whole world. This belief arises out of the experience that my parents had when they did their Masters of Science in the University of Pennsylvania during the years 1967-69. If I can get an opportunity to be a part of that intellectually stimulating environment, I am sure my talents will be put to optimal use.
India is a developing country with an enormous potential in the information technology business. To serve the needs of this developing industry and more important its vast population, communications is going to become of utmost importance. Thus conditions here are very conducive to supplement my aspirations when I return after completing my graduate studies.

I am applying for admission to the Ph.D. program in Business Administration because I want a career in the research and teaching of management. In particular, I am interested in factors that affect the competitive performance of a business concern, and the manner in which changes in technology affect an organization’s structure, long-term business strategy, product development, manufacturing, supply chains, distribution network, information needs and standard systems. In order to gain an appreciation of these and related issues, it is essential for me to have a strong grounding in Economics, Supply Chain Management, and issues connected with Information Technology, as well as gain a General Management perspective.
I believe that the Ph.D. program in Business Administration (with concentration in Management) would be invaluable in helping me achieve these objectives. It would enable me to channel my quantitative and conceptual skills in analyzing business issues and would open up new avenues in research. Subsequent to earning a Ph.D., I would like to apply for a faculty position at a leading university; and investigate issues concerned with technology as it affects organization strategy, structure and systems
I believe that my background in engineering and management has prepared me for such a career. I have found research fascinating since my engineering days, where I received the highest marks in the Department for my final-year undergraduate dissertation; and was judged to have presented the best paper at a Departmental seminar. My four years of engineering education have provided me with a strong grounding in mathematics (I stood first in my Department for each of the four Math papers) and the theoretical aspects of technology.
I joined ABC Business School in order to broaden my perspective and to improve my career prospects. Economics and psychology - subjects new to me - were interesting, and I enjoyed applying quantitative and conceptual skills to analyze business problems. I did very well in projects, desk research, workshops and class discussion; although academically I did not perform to my satisfaction (I finished with a GPA of 2.91, partly due to health reasons). I was voted as one of the ten most promising students in my batch, and received a national-level award for the best business school project, awarded by the Institute of Management Consultants of India. This was for a summer project, entitled "Formulation and Implementation of a Marketing Strategy for Handicrafts, a unit of the Special Person’s Association".
Upon graduating from business school I was offered a job with AZ & Co., a management consulting firm which ranks as among India’s largest. This is where I learned how to apply the principles and lessons of management to real life. It was fascinating; and transformed my interest in management research into a passion. I read extensively, trying to keep myself informed about management thinking in my areas of work - structure and systems in an industry and organization, industrial marketing and strategy.
I have learnt a lot on my present job. With the rest of my team, I have analyzed markets and examined supply and distribution networks for such diverse products and industries as bulk chemicals, fresh fruit exports, toys, packaging machinery, retailing, adhesives, diamonds and pharmaceuticals. I have helped formulate entry strategies, plans for expansion and diversification; and also company business plans. As part of a team, I have carried out preliminary feasibility studies; compared technology options; suggested to the Forex Bank of India, a plan for improving the export competitiveness of India's Chemicals Sector; and studied government schemes for their efficacy. I have studied in detail the organization structure and systems for one of India's largest manufacturers of automobiles and helped in the restructuring of the company as well as the redesigning of their new systems.
These assignments have involved interaction with people at all levels of the value chain, and at organizational levels from the Chairman of a $ 200 million firm to a packing clerk earning $1 daily. They have given me the opportunity to interview a number of policy makers, industry analysts and economists in an effort to understand the functioning of, and important issues connected with, each of these industries.
All this has given me valuable insights into the environment in which companies operate - how they affect this environment and are affected by it. It has enabled me to observe some of the better and worse ways of running a business. Certain assignments have been thought provoking; my most recent assignment, on the redesigning of a company's structure and systems, helped me understand the necessity of good organization structures, and appreciate the significance of systems that work well. A study on the export competitiveness of India's chemicals sector brought home to me the importance of technology in determining a company's or industry's competitiveness. An assignment involving the evaluation of an air freight subsidy scheme for exporters of fresh fruits raised fundamental questions in my mind about the efficacy of subsidies in improving the competitiveness of an industrial sector, and encouraged me to look at more lasting measures instead.
The time limitation on each assignment has taught me to plan well, work systematically and keep my reports up-to-date. At the same time, having to defend my analyses and recommendations, during both internal discussions and presentations to clients, has taught me to think rigorously and creatively. Our extensive use of computers for analysis and preparation of presentations and reports has made me familiar with spreadsheet, word processing and presentation packages.
While the highly diverse nature of assignments has helped me gain a broad exposure to Indian industry, it has not been possible for me to study specific business and technology - related issues in depth. I realize that in order to be able to do so, I need a better understanding of the various facets of management; the interlinkages between different functional areas and between different business entities. Equally important, I need further training in research methodology.
I want to do a Ph.D. at the College of Business, XYZ University for many reasons. I have heard about XYZ's Ph.D. program in Business Administration from my business school professors and am impressed with the emphasis placed on technical and analytical skills, general management orientation and rigorous research methodology. The School's strengths in supply chain management and information management are commensurate with my research interests. The faculty's reputation for excellent teaching, challenging coursework and the excellent facilities are added attractions.
While the study of and research in management is my prime objective today, my interests in literature, music, travel and nature help me maintain a sense of perspective in life. I like to write and have had some articles published in Indian newspapers. I have organized and participated in a number of extra-curricular activities during my college days and have won university and national level prizes in debating, writing and quizzes. I also believe that each of us must give something back to society - to this end, I have worked on a voluntary basis for the Hunger Project for a year; as a teacher and counselor to physically and mentally handicapped children for three years; and as a reader to blind students. Today, I contribute to a local organization that focuses on the environment of my hometown, Allahabad.

Like we all know, there is always a better way. I began to wonder if human minds can be trained to think laterally, can not the same human develop similar capabilities on computers?
I knew I had stumbled upon Artificial Intelligence (AI)! I began reading about AI from various journals, books and the Internet and armed myself with extensive knowledge and information on AI.
My dedication and contribution to AI grew and it stretched as far as my being able to present technical papers at national level symposia in India. I have presented a paper that analyzes Computer Gaming Technologies and some of the algorithms used by the AI engines in various categories of games.
Where do I want to go from here….
I have thus developed a powerful intellectual urge to empower myself with futuristic technological skills and keep abreast with the trends in AI. I am very keen to do some independent research in this field.
With my high-spirited motivation for graduate studies and the right mindset to pursue and realize determined goals, I foresee a great future and vocation ahead, in the realm of AI, not just in gaming but in other areas too, such as space research, avionics, industrial & home automation et al.

If one were to ask my friends to describe me they would describe me as a very pleasant, diverse, active and intelligent woman. I think one of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. I am a science student with a flair for the arts. I am a woman with technical aptitude and an interest in management. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my graduate work.
My Engineering degree has given a strong foundation to my analytical skills since civil designing involves a lot of long, complex and intricate calculations and the application of basic math skills. Over the past four years, I have been working part-time with my family firm, SnMTech Systems. I am also the co-founder and active member with FOE - Friends of the Environment. I have assisted in the installation of Enterprise-wide Resource Planning (ERP) System at Blotech, a major Engineering Company. More than what I have studied in school and college, it has been these experiences that have shaped the person that I am today.
I believe that this unique blend of experiences has made me a woman with an original point of view. My most substantial accomplishment has been the success of the software upgradation project that I managed at SnMTech Systems Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, where I have been working as a part time Associate Intern - Management Information Systems since 1994.
During the first two years of my work at SnMTech, I had an opportunity to observe and work with the existing system being used. Some of the software packages being used were outdated versions. I have always been in touch with the latest software packages thanks to the powerful PC I have at home and am quite used to working with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) environment. At the office, there was great deal of chaos while preparing reports that involved use of more than one software since compatibility between packages usually posed a problem. The difficulty we faced putting different files together led to the final report appearing rather haphazard sometimes.
I believe in providing and maintaining non-negotiable high standards and service. I recognized that shifting to a newer GUI based software would not only dramatically improve our documentation quality, but also increase productivity at the workplace. Presenting the pros and cons to the management of the upgradation was a very challenging task. I was asked to prepare a proposal regarding the upgradation of the firm's software. Initially, I imagined this project would be rather simple but it turned out to be among the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life.
Through a firm-wide survey of operators and several one-on-one discussions of their own preferences and solutions, I found that while everybody wanted an upgradation, they had doubts since they would have to learn a whole set of new skills. In order to prepare a budget, I procured quotations from various vendors and analyzed possible combinations. I realized the necessity of a training course for the operators because most of them were not familiar with the GUI interface. I examined the various training classes that offered private in-house training for the employees. After a detailed analysis, I presented my report to the management in the next meeting. They were pleased with my efforts and pleasantly surprised at the cost of the project since it seemed to be comparatively less than what they had anticipated.
Once I was given the go-ahead, the next hurdle was to implement the proposal and coordinate the upgrading. To avoid any disturbance to the company's work, training sessions were planned after working hours. The upgrading took a week and the training of the operators took another two weeks. The really tough period started once the training personnel left. The management felt that it was my responsibility to see that the operators didn't face any problems once they actually started using the new software packages. I put in 60 to 70-hour weeks for the next three weeks before everyone was comfortable with the new system. While the benefits of using these packages were not immediately tangible, a few months later our clients acknowledged that the quality of the reports we sent them had improved considerably. In fact, a year later our firm decided to upgrade all of its software packages. I consider this to be a tacit compliment for my efforts.
This project required me to believe in myself and in what I thought was good for the company. I had to take a pro-active approach, take the initiative and play a leadership role in motivating people and executing the project to completion A good manager is one who can figure out where the problem lies, deal with it effectively by involving all the members of the company and improve the overall culture of the company. The problem I saw at SnMTech had to be resolved to sustain the company's image. The fact that I was able to pull off this task alone has boosted my confidence in my abilities.

Outstanding academic performance in my school and college, active participation in academic as well as extra curricular activities and work experience have helped to develop strong quantitative and analytical abilities and good leadership and communication skills. Part time employment since November 1994 as a sales executive with Darwin Inc, a company manufacturing pest traps has been a rewarding experience. I also take active interest in organising and managing promotional activities such as exhibitions and seminars of the company's products. With the opening of the Indian economy, the markets have gradually become buyers' markets. In India, market research is essentially used as a reactive tool, it is in the static stage; whereas, I feel that MR should serve as a proactive tool, helping corporations optimize their functioning by bringing research into all marketing efforts, by integrating it into the long and short term marketing strategies and by involving the operational staff who actually carry out the work that can use informed research results. Market research often ends up being used as an isolated tool that gives a narrow picture of the past without giving a holistic view and an insight into the future.

Early in my childhood, the Internet became more than just a luxury--it became a necessity. My father moved from Singapore to Indonesia to start a textile company when I was four years old, leaving me alone with my mother. To alleviate the pressures of separation, I developed the computer skills needed for electronic communication and was able to remain in close contact with my father. This experience solidified my interest in information technology and exposed me to the enormous potential of this developing field.
In the summer of 1992, I exploited my knowledge of IT to help those in my community. I volunteered at a local library, helping people with computer and Internet-related questions. Also at that time, my father's business had launched many technological changes that led to the automation of its production line. These improvements had saved his company from bankruptcy. Visiting him and seeing how the new system had increased his profits heightened my interest in IT. I now live in Canada, where computers continue to play a large role in my daily affairs. I use electronic mail and Internet chats to communicate with both parents, and have chosen management information systems as my course of study. Information technology fascinates me not only because it makes companies more competitive, but also because it can bridge great distances to bring people together. I have much respect for and interest in the IT industry.
Personal satisfaction also plays a key role in my career decision. My classmates called me "the alien," and they avoided me like the plague. As a young boy, I suffered from severe dermatitis, which filled my limbs with ulcers and scars. The true pain of my condition, however, was social; I was alienated from my classmates and lived a life of loneliness and isolation. Doctors predicted that I would never fully recover, but my parents refused to accept this. They encouraged me to hope for the future, teaching me that any obstacle could be overcome. I therefore took an active role in my health, trying many medications and herbs.
Approaching my loneliness with bravery, I came to view it as a challenge to be overcome. The summer after I graduated from primary school, my disease improved dramatically. Although my body remained riddled with scars, the ulcers vanished. The self-confidence I regained was profound; I realized that my personal will had led to this improvement. I began to seek out friendships at school, and I took part in activities like volleyball, Girl Guide, and Art Club. Through it all, my attitude toward challenges remained the same. In every examination or competition, I told myself that I could easily excel since nothing could be more difficult than what I had already overcome. By the time I moved to Canada, I had fully recovered both socially and physically. Moreover, I had learned to be confident and never to fear failure. This credo echoes through my personal life and gives me the inner resolve to succeed at any endeavor, including my professional pursuits.
Like my personal battle with dermatitis, I learned a great deal about leadership by overcoming adversity. While enrolled in an ESL program in Canada, I joined the Culture Club as a Special Event Director. I managed a group of six individuals in organizing various functions. I was the most advanced ESL student among the group, and I therefore assumed myself to be the most capable. I quickly learned my mistake. While preparing our first function, I was strict with my team members and often rejected their ideas in favor of my own. I performed most of their tasks myself, allowing them to assist me only in minor details. As a result, the function was not very successful. Few people attended, and we had problems with decorations and presentation. The setback disheartened me, and I spoke of it to the club's supervisor. She responded that she trusted my ability to succeed in the future. This comment filled me with surprise, for I realized that I had never trusted my own team members. Although they were weak in English, they had many valuable talents. I immediately changed my policy, allowing team members to choose the tasks they desired and to complete them on their own.
Meetings evolved into group brainstorming sessions, which yielded many good ideas. Most importantly, the atmosphere among us improved dramatically. We were happier and more eager to devote time to the program. I learned what true leadership is, and the experience undoubtedly improved my ability to handle challenging business situations.

With the opening of the Indian economy, the markets have gradually become buyers' markets. In India, market research is essentially used as a reactive tool, it is in the static stage; whereas, I feel that MR should serve as a proactive tool, helping corporations optimize their functioning by bringing research into all marketing efforts, by integrating it into the long and short term marketing strategies and by involving the operational staff who actually carry out the work that can use informed research results. Market research often ends up being used as an isolated tool that gives a narrow picture of the past without giving a holistic view and an insight into the future.

I decided to attend the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) as a Math - Computer Science (CS) major with the intention of working in the information technology industry one day. During my first year of college, I heard about courses offered in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Further conversations with a student specializing in HCI enlightened me on its applications in the everyday world. I realized that knowledge of the cognitive aspects of organization and representation of information with a strong CS background could help me create efficient information architectures and effective user interactive designs. I could even draw upon my course work and experiences in extracurricular activities in so far as they relate to human interaction with technology to help overcome communication barriers. For example, a drama performance with its power of presentation, the silent display of paintings and the world of the blind and handicapped all present subtle insights to effective communication. Hence, along with my major field of study, I pursued cognitive science to achieve my goal of being able to work with people and computers simultaneously.
Throughout my undergraduate career, I have engaged myself in activities that merge the components of art, human behavior and technology to enable better learning methods amongst youth and I want to continue to do so at a professional level. Graduate studies in HCI will enable me to develop the skills to create software designs that I can subsequently apply in an academic environment to promote e-learning techniques. Since I lived in India for ten years and am aware of the large number of disadvantaged, poor and handicapped people, I would eventually like to implement such methods in the underserved segments of an Indian society. I am attracted by the vast research facilities at UG that can be a major resource in developing effective interactive computer interfaces. Research projects on learning technologies like the Center for Highly Interactive Computing in Education (Hi-Ce) is of particular interest to me since it deals with the academic development in youth by blending the social sciences with technical components.
In order to broaden my understanding of the role of cognition in everyday computer applications, I have taken several courses at UCSB in the specific area of cognitive science. My coursework has also investigated the cognitive basis of successful multimedia designs while looking at its impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of information systems. In addition to these challenging courses, I have gained extensive knowledge about interactive designs and computer mediated communication through computer science courses, research projects, industrial experience and organizational involvement.
I have always liked teaching, and as I explored HCI related projects, I got an opportunity to work with a distance education program at UCSB. We used interactive mathematics software to tutor students from underserved communities via the internet. Communication problems amongst the tutors grew when the team of five expanded fivefold in the next year. To resolve the issue, I initiated a file based information management system in which the tutors entered detailed reports of tutoring sessions they conducted with the students. This system eliminated any unnecessary repetition of material by another tutor during a follow-up session, thus improving the efficiency of the program. This experience was very exhilarating as it involved working in a team that succeeded in starting a new project to contribute to the needs of the society. I gained an extensive insight into how students from similar backgrounds respond differently to the same information presented to them. Having interacted with these children for almost two years, I learned more about their family environment and the hardships they undergo at home. I realized that due to the lack of encouragement from their family, disinterest in school and education, we were their only source of motivation to excel academically. Thus, we constantly reminded them of the importance of higher education and reassured them that just like us, they are also capable of obtaining a college degree. The fascination of learning through computers as opposed to classroom teaching and being able to learn at their own pace also inspired the students to make an effort to achieve better scores. 80% of the students tutored within those two years graduated from elementary algebra and were placed in advanced level math classes the following year.
During my second year at UCSB, I joined Worldguide, WashSpace at the XYZ Institute of Oceanography as a summer intern. I worked with the Worldguide team in creating internet-based courses on Earth and Environmental science for K-12 students. I had the URL for Worldguide added as a useful link to the official websites of 27 state boards of K-12 education across the US as well as an Australian board of education. The most difficult part of this project was organizing all the information we had gathered in a clear and concise way to enhance learning. I found it particularly challenging to design an attractive layout of the material that would appeal to K-12 children. However, as a team we were able to coordinate our efforts and achieve our goal.
Currently I am developing an e-learning course on Web Programming Languages with a team of five students from the Cognitive Science department at UCSB. I have succeeded in filtering all the available information on learning JavaScript and rewriting it into five hours worth of lecture material. This task required evaluating and summarizing several books and online resources while ensuring all necessary and sufficient information to teach JavaScript was included. My next challenge was to create interactive exercises based on the course content to promote active learning. I have incorporated popular themes like the TV sitcom Friends and Starbucks coffee into the lecture material and exercises. For example, after discussing data types and concatenation of variables in the lecture, I introduce an interactive exercise that ties both of the themes together. I ask the students to help Rachel make a vanilla latte for Joey by looking at a Starbucks menu and displaying the ingredients as a concatenation of string variables. I believe this is a good way to hold the students attention and interest since these are things they enjoy and can relate to. Through this experience, I have gained a better understanding of the cognitive aspects of user-centered design.
While I lived in India, I was an active member of the Red Cross Committee. Through this organization, I spent a year with the poor people in slums, playing with the children and helping out in the one-room school. Additionally, I had the opportunity of reading to students at the school for blind children for three years. While these activities were both educational and enjoyable, they also provided me with a unique experience in the basics of communication against the backdrop of emotional and physical handicap.
Additionally, I have been able to explore a variety of marketing techniques as well as learn more about digital aesthetics through the UCSB Advertising club. Thus, I have had wonderful opportunities to combine my interests in working with people, computers and art. Although I have learned a lot from these experiences, I feel that with further training in HCI I could improve my performance in developing effective user interface designs and information architectures. I am convinced that the HCI program and research opportunities involving education and youth at SI will help me succeed in pursuing my ambition of advancing computer mediated education in an underserved community. I have had plenty of experience in creating and developing interactive e-learning courses for underprivileged students in particular, that I could share with research projects that address educational problems faced in rural environments. Okay, what you have so far are some good reasons for going into e-business. Now, expand on them. So, the amount of trade conducted electronically has grown extraordinarily. It still is much less than the amount of trade conducted in traditional venues, so why not pursue an MBA? You want to run your own business. Great. What sort of business? Will it be wholly an e-commerce one, or do you just want to be ready to give your ordinary business an e-presence? Then, add to that your reasons for taking a degree at the particular university you are applying to. So, why X university instead of universities A, B, or C? You see, the best way to start writing is to start writing. Put stuff down on paper (metaphorically speaking). Even if your ideas don't really connect up all that well at first, at least you'll have a draft to work with. You can rearrange your sentences, even entire paragraphs, to improve. Then, you can worry about polishing the first sentence or adding an interesting hook. It isn't that uncommon for professional writers to write the introduction last, once they know what it is they will be introducing, as it were.
Great choice of action. I agree that e-commerce is a great thing to study. So, why is this particular school perfect for you? For each school to which you apply, explan why it is the perfect choice! :) It may not even have the perfect program, per se, but perhaps there are some great faculty members with whom you identify... and perhaps the school has certain resources. Years ago, I worked on a suicide hotline, and one of the concerns was that if a person had a clear plan about how they would do it, that meant they might be REALLY serious!! In a twisted sort of way, the same principle applies here: Show that you have a clear plan for your future at this school and beyond.

Using some old hose pipes, plastic tubes and a pulley arrangement I developed the model. This model won the gold medal at the prestigious Indian National science congress. While still in the third year of undergraduate program in Engineering I became the Technical consultant for a start up company. My technical idea won the first prize at Eureka 50K, India’s first Business Plan competition. For the past two and a half years I have been working in XXX corporation. The will to learn and the ability to spend long hours of cerebration on trouble shooting have made me a dependable team player.Today as a 24-year-old individual I perceive that life for me has been a process of conscious evolution. The most integral part of this growth is the value system imbibed in me by my parents, teachers and my mentors and an intrigued liking for science. This played a vital role in my decision making for the future. As I finished high school I was selected for the Indian Naval Academy with merit ranking in the Top 25 in the country. My four years of undergraduate studies in CS at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore and my exposure and penchant for research have made the choice of further study, for me, an obvious one. My goal is to pursue a career in research, either in industry or in academia. Ten years from now, I envisage myself as a full-fledged research professional in an organization, or a faculty member at one of the leading universities. The first step towards my objective would be to pursue Masters Program in Computer Science. My ultimate degree objective would however be a Ph.D.

Throughout my student career I have been a top ranking student. I was in the top 0.05% of all engineering aspirants in my state, which secured me a place in PSG College of Technology- one of the premier institutions in India. Over the past two years, my liking for research has burgeoned especially in the fields of security and distributed computing.
I started by studying various information hiding techniques. After extensive literature survey in the fields of Steganography and Watermarking, I published my own technique for efficient information hiding in low resolution images using Newtons Forward Difference in Springer-Verlag LNCS. I have also worked with watermarking techniques especially audio watermarking and echo hiding and my paper titled “A Novel Embedding System For Efficient Watermarking In Auido In Echo” tests the fitness of the NFD Technique in this field of research. I used the NFD Technique to compress uncorrelated frames in a video file by establishing a relationship by generating a Correlation polynomial. This proposal was well acclaimed when I presented in the International Conference of Human Machine’s Interface (ICHMI 04) at Indian Institute of Science (IISc Bangalore).

Two of my courses Distributed Component Architecture and Client Server Computing interested me a lot. I was very keen on doing some research work in these areas and devoted quality time towards an in-depth understanding of these subjects and tried to implement my own ideas in these fields.

My urge and potential for research was identified and I was chosen to lead the team for a research project, “Code Optimisation in Middleware-based Distributed Embedded Systems”. We built a security framework for CORBA – based applications providing 6 security services, which includes authentication, authorization, non-repudiation, data integrity, auditing and security while transmission. We designed a 128-bit symmetric key crypto algorithm G- MAP to be used in all the security services. During the course of the project, I had the opportunity to design an N-tier for the distributed nature of the framework and implement them in java. Our originality and substantial work in the project was appropriately recognized and the project was given ‘The Best Project Award’, in the department.

My academic pursuits have not however, prevented me from participating with interest in various co-curricular activities including organizing seminars and serving as representative of the class. These activities have led to the development of a multifaceted personality and have equipped me with strong interpersonal skills. My academic achievements, research work and inter personal skills were well acknowledged and I was given the ‘Best outgoing student’ award in our batch.

I am currently working with Computer Associates and I am working on the project “Security and Device Management of Smart phones”. Apart from managing smart phones, this project deals with designing security policies for them and implementing the same using Java technologies. My work spans across all the tiers of the project, which includes building the GUI using JSTL and JSF, implementing the business logic using Enterprise Java Beans and designing the database using SQL Server.

If admitted I plan to carry on with my advanced studies in the fields of security and distributed computing systems. Considering the pioneering work going on at your department labs Distributed Systems Software Lab (DSSL) and Information Systems Security Lab (MISSL), which perfectly match with the field of my interest, computer science department at University of Maryland, is the ideal choice for an exciting research career. From my early childhood till today, my most remarkable characteristics have been my curiosity to learn new topics. My keen interest for learning new ideas, when combined with my inner desire to reach a degree of excellence in every piece of work I perform, enabled me to acquire significant knowledge on various aspects of nature and technology, as well as leading me through a successful educational career.

During my early ages in school, I was introduced to ‘BASIC’ language and on how computers can be used and programmed. From then, I became fascinated about computers and their programming. After I entered the High School, I was made known with languages like ‘C’ and ‘HTML’ on my personal interest. In my second year of High School, I made a laboratory demonstration, in ‘ABC’s Vision' 2002, about Computer Languages and gave lecture on it to my fellows.

Consequently, I took part in a discussion group (Computer Club) of senior high school students and schoolteachers who motivated me to select computer science as my career. Personal satisfaction also plays a key role in my career decision. I enjoy acquiring new skills and information, which help me to adapt to the fast-changing world, as well as pique my interest in innovation. In addition, a career with open prospects would give me constant incentive to improve myself and to gain more knowledge.

The first year lectures of my undergraduate were about freshman courses which I was already familiar with, however, in consequent years, the versatility and facile nature of Computers made it even more interesting and really left me spellbound and enthralled. This solidified my interest in Computer science and exposed me to the enormous potential of this developing field. This application is very important for me because completion a PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering is the best chance for a unifying my interest in information technologies and my natural inclination to mathematics. I am confident that when I become a serious and mature researcher my desire to make a contribution to science and to our understanding of this world will remain my main driving force.

It took a long time until personal computers became widely available in this country and until then my only single interest was mathematics. At the age of 14, during my school holidays, when my classmates had a rest, I willingly got up at about 7 in the morning and till the evening was absorbed by mathematics. At that time these were mostly Olympiad problems, but two years later, still being a High School student, I attended a course on inequalities in Kiev State University and conducted my first research work. Essentially it was a proof of Karamat inequality that utilized properties of convex functions and Murhead inequality. It was unforgettable, how main idea of my central proof dawned upon me. Although, relatively simple, it was something innovative, something that no one had ever done before with methods of elementary mathematics. That evening I went to sleep the happiest boy in the world. Later I refined the proof and being a freshman at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology(MIPT) presented it at the 52nd MIPT Scientific Conference where it was honored the first prize.

In the third-year at MIPT I started working at the Institute of System Programming (ISP), which is a part of Russian Academy of Sciences. Lectures on computer science at the ISP expanded my knowledge in many important fields such as complexity of algorithms, parallel computing, compiler technology, software engineering and so on. Especially I enjoyed studying new Autonomous Adaptive Control (AAC) method under the guidance of Prof. X. The essence of the AAC method is in simultaneous solution of such problems as pattern recognition, knowledge obtaining, presentation and decision-making. During my work in the ISP I had rare opportunity to interact closely with scientists who stood at the origin of computer science in Russia: Prof. X, Dr. Y and Prof. Z.
In my fourth year I joined Moscow office of NetCracker Corp. that selected several students for training. NetCracker produces software for modeling, analysis and interpretation of complex telecommunication networks. My work in NetŠ”racker gave me solid practical knowledge of many technologies and concepts such as Java, Oracle, XML, Object-Oriented Design and Programming. But much more important is that the project required extensive knowledge of both mathematics and computer science. I personally wrote some modules to NetCracker where actively utilized graph theory, parallel computing and discrete mathematics. Moreover sometimes generalization of classical algorithms was required. For example, I extended Dejkstra algorithm to allow multiple search of optimal paths.

Along with my study of computer science I am involved in research activity in fundamental mathematics. Under supervision of Professor X I conducted research in convex analysis, wrote my thesis ”Integration of Multivalued Mappings“ and defended it with Honors. Essentially it consisted in a study of necessary and sufficient conditions under which there exists Riemann integral of multivalued maps. During this work I acquired a broad range of research experience and strong background necessary for further research. My current research work is devoted to differentiation of multivalued mappings and differential inclusions and is mostly concerned with nonconvex case. One of the most challenging tasks in the work is to obtain Pontryagin maximum principle in Hamiltonian form from Lagrange form (in terms of tangent cones).

My research topic is closely related with and often serves as a background to theory of optimal control and theory of decision making that are widely used in network optimization and graph algorithms - areas that are of great interest to me. Moreover my work on network performance in NetCracker adds up to this framework. Investigations in these fields, in discrete mathematics and in the theory of compilers are widespread at the department and it makes admission to your University particularly desirable. I have strongest incentive to advance as far as I can in this field and to discover something that has not been known before. I am certain that application to Carnegie Mellon is the best possible step to accomplish it and I would regard my admission not only as a great honor but also as a great responsibility and an obligation to work hard.

I remember the day as if it were yesterday. During my second year in college, I was attempting to transmit a group of characters comprising my name from one computer to another. I connected the computers using RS-232 cable, wrote the necessary programs and executed them. I typed my name on one terminal and rushed to the other to see the results. "Wow, this is magic!" I exclaimed as I read 'Tom' on the screen. While I realized intuitively that a complex version of this elementary network could achieve much, at the time I had no real idea what. Now, four years later, I know that Networking makes possible a plethora of applications, from video-conferencing over the Internet to linking banks through private networks. It still seems like magic. Or rather, a grand adventure - one that I most certainly want to be part of.
My interest in applied science dates back to my school days. During high school, I was fascinated with electronic gadgets. Soon thereafter, designing and building basic circuits started as a hobby. Along the way, however, I realized that the problem-solving aspect of making electronic gadgets was what I enjoyed the most. Engineering was a natural career choice after this.
During my undergraduate studies at the Electronics & Communication department of M.K. College of Engineering, subjects like Microprocessors, C-Programming, Computer Networks interested me the most. I was awestruck by the potential of Intel 8086 microprocessor, more so by the manner in which its faster and more powerful cousins revolutionized the working of computers in a decade. I was now determined to focus on microprocessors during my Final Year project.
I elected to do the project at National Space Research Organization (NSRO) as it has an outstanding infrastructure setup and a stimulating, world-class research environment. This enabled me to work with some of the best minds dedicated to engineering research in my country. I gained a lot from this association - in particular, an idea of how rewarding and meaningful a career in research could be. The more tangible benefits have been a deeper insight into architecture and working of microprocessors and thorough C-programming skills. Sometimes I spent more than ten hours a day at NSRO, reading manuals and troubleshooting circuits and debugging code. I am glad to say the effort paid off in the end. Mr. Tendulkar, my project guide, deemed the results of my project to be most valuable. The interface card that I designed was later added to NSRO's Spacecraft Interface Simulator (SIS) systems. This project was the highlight of my academic career. Most importantly, I left NSRO with the decision to study advanced computing.
During my first job at Neville Engineering and Locomotive Co. (NELCO), I developed a real-time monitoring system for the Molding Line in Foundry. Success on this project gave me the confidence to provide software solutions to real-life problems. Although I liked the job, software development at NELCO was a support function. I therefore switched to Mohinder Belgian Telecom Ltd. (MBT), a multinational company providing software solutions in wide-ranging fields, telecommunications being its forte. At MBT, I have been involved with Project ART, Belgian Telecom's new front-end system providing intelligent access to its Customer Service System (CSS). Working on this project has helped me hone my programming skills on real-life problems. I developed an appreciation of 'the big picture', and conversely how important details are. I also discovered leadership skills in myself, and frequently assisted colleagues who had little or no background in computers. As an outcome of this, the company asked me to take occasional seminars on Operating Systems and C-Programming for my colleagues. I have been appointed Team Leader within a year and today, I independently look after enhancements and maintenance of three modules out of the sixteen in Project ART.
During my work on project ART at MBT and through my interaction with colleagues, I have grown to admire the role of Computer Networks in empowering end-users. I am not directly involved with Computer Networks in my job, but through avid reading of periodicals and journals like 'Network World', I have sustained my interest in the field. In fact, after reading about the immense potential of path-breaking protocols such as 'Multicast' and applications like 'Voice Over IP' and 'Virtual Private Networks', I cannot help but feel excited about the potential for new research in this area.
While my present job has helped me develop a thorough insight into project handling, the industry environment that I am currently in cannot support my desire for research. I possess industry-hardened skills in Computers, but I must build on these to achieve my goal of undertaking cutting-edge research in advanced computing, with specific reference to Computer Networks. I therefore believe that I must return to the academic world for further growth.
I wish to earn an MS degree in Computer Science. I intend to follow this up with a Ph.D., and later, a career in research and teaching. I have spoken to my professors, seniors and colleagues about my choice of University, and have applied to Princeton University because it is reputable for its research facilities and computing resources. The department web site revealed a very strong faculty involved in extensive research in the area of Computer Networks. This has strengthened my resolve to study at Princeton University.
